Honoring a Life Through This Obituary
John Daniel Everett, age 81, of Santa Rosa, California, passed away peacefully on June 12, 2024, surrounded by family and listening to his favorite quiet jazz records. A devoted husband, father, teacher, and neighbor, John's life was defined by quiet integrity, service to others, and a deep love for learning.
Born in Denver, Colorado, on October 8, 1942, to Helen and Frank Everett, John spent his early years exploring the outdoors and reading every book he could get his hands on. He later earned a degree in English Literature from the University of Colorado, followed by a master’s in education from UC Berkeley.
After settling in Northern California, John began what would become a 35-year teaching career at Santa Rosa High School, where he inspired generations of students with his passion for literature, kindness, and dry sense of humor.
In 1969, John married the love of his life, Barbara (née Collins). Together, they built a life rooted in mutual respect, Sunday hikes, good coffee, and the occasional crossword puzzle competition. Their home was always open — to friends, neighbors, exchange students, and anyone in need of a listening ear.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Barbara Everett; their daughters, Rachel (Michael) Carter of Petaluma and Sarah Everett of Boston; his grandson, Nathan Carter; his brother, Mark Everett (Susan) of Bend, Oregon; and numerous nieces, nephews, former students, and lifelong friends.
In retirement, John volunteered at the local public library, mentored new teachers, and continued to write — essays, letters, and the occasional unpublished novel draft. He believed in the power of words, the strength of compassion, and the value of showing up — whether for a student’s play, a neighbor’s repair project, or simply to sit quietly beside someone grieving. Obituaries like John’s remind us that even the quietest lives can leave lasting echoes in the hearts of many. A private memorial will be held at the family’s request. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Santa Rosa Public Library Foundation or to a literacy program of your choice.
John Everett lived a life of substance, humility, and unwavering care for those around him. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
