Greenland, Polar Bears, and Nick Nolte — A Pan Am Story

A true Pan Am story from the cockpit — waking passengers to see Greenland, joking about polar bears, and a surprise encounter with Nick Nolte.

A Nick Nolty Story as he was flying on Pan Am

This Pan Am Nick Nolte story is one of those moments that makes you appreciate the unexpected humor of flying. On certain eastbound flights from London to New York, when the skies were clear, we were treated to a rare sight: Greenland, in all its icy beauty, from 35,000 feet. What began as a routine scenic announcement turned into a memorable exchange with actor Nick Nolte.

When Greenland Was in View

Flying westbound from London to New York, Greenland was sometimes visible below — a breathtaking landscape of glaciers, ice fields, and rugged mountains. Many days it was hidden by clouds, but when the view was clear, I made it a point to wake passengers so they could see it.

The flight attendants were good sports about it, even though it often meant an influx of drink orders and a disrupted rest schedule. They knew it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for many passengers — and they enjoyed it too.

The Polar Bear Game

From the cockpit’s panoramic view, I’d sometimes say, “If you look closely, you may see a polar bear and her cubs down on the left.” It was just a bit of fun — people would look eagerly, though I never actually spotted one. My wife, who once joined me on a flight with a clear view of Greenland, later asked if I really saw them. I smiled and left that one unanswered.

A Surprise at the Door

After landing, it was customary for the captain to stand at the cockpit door and thank passengers for flying Pan Am. On this flight, one gentleman with a gruff voice approached and said: "I was sleeping soundly until some guy got on the microphone, woke me up, and started talking about Greenland and polar bears. Was that you, Captain Bill?”

I admitted it was, and apologized, explaining that most passengers wanted to be awakened for such a rare sight. His expression softened, and he said:

Well, I just want to thank you for waking me up. It was the most beautiful view I’ve ever seen — but I didn’t see those damn polar bears!”

The Reveal

He walked away with a grin, leaving me puzzled because his face seemed familiar. I asked a flight attendant who he was. She replied, “That’s Nick Nolte.”

It turned out Nick Nolte had completely sold me on his “upset passenger” act — and I had to admit, he played the part like a pro.
